If you’ve been thinking of painting your Upstate South Carolina home yourself to save money, you’re not alone. Many homeowners toy with the idea–at least briefly–before deciding to choose a professional painter, such as A Perfectionist Touch, to make sure the job is done right, done quickly and done as perfectly as possible. DIY painting jobs often end up disappointing, surprisingly expensive and time-consuming.
Here are just three ways we see painting mistakes from inexperienced people:
- Poor prep work – it’s apparently too tempting to skimp on prep work because this is the #1 mistake we see from do-it-yourselfers. Not taping the trim, avoiding filling in the holes, not knowing how to fix the blemishes, not preparing for the primer, forgetting to wash the walls, skipping applying the primer, rushing the drying stage, and using masking tape instead of painter’s tape are all common mistakes that can really cost you in the end.
Without preparing the old layer of paint, such as sanding and then washing a high gloss wall to receive primer, your new layer of paint is not going to adhere properly, or it may be prone to run, or you may pick up dirt that will show. Additionally, if you are painting over wallpaper, you have to be careful to use the right oil-based primer to prepare for the color you’ve chosen.
- Wrong paint choice – with all the different finishes available, it’s no wonder that people often make the wrong choice with the sheen. A high-traffic area will immediately suffer if you choose flat paint, which shows the dirt and can’t be easily washed. A sunny room can become unbearable with a high gloss sheen. And an old wall with a lot of imperfections will show every flaw with a glossy finish.
A poor quality paint will make your room look less attractive, no matter how brilliant your color coordinating may be. A high quality paint without a primer will not deliver the coverage that it should have with the benefit of a proper under layer. And choosing the wrong color is sometimes the biggest heartbreak of all.
- Poor application technique – if the paint is applied in a random way, with a flimsy roller or cheap brushes, you’re not going to be happy with the outcome. Visible brush marks, streaks, drips that hardened, ceiling bumps made by the roller, and poorly cut junctions are going to spoil the effect of the new paint job.
